New Telecom Act: Big News! New Telecom Act to be implemented form 26th June 2024

New telecommunication Act: Many changes are going to happen with the Telecommunication Act 2023. These changes can come in telecommunication services under the Act which will come into force from June 26.

The Telecommunication Act 2023 is going to come into force from June 26. After which the central government will be able to take control of any telecom service or network in case of emergency. The government has partially notified the Act from Friday. Under this Act, some provisions including sections 1,2,10 and 30 will be implemented from June 26.

According to this notification, the provisions of sections 1, 2, 10 to 30, 42 to 44, 47, 50, 58, 61 and 62 of the Act will also come into force from June 26, 2024. With this, the government will be able to take control of telecommunication services on the basis of public order, government security and prevention of criminals.

Section 20 of the Telecommunications Act 2023:

  • Under Section 20 of the Telecommunications Act 2023, which comes into force from June 26, the government gets the right to control telecom services in an emergency.
  • The purpose of this Act is to ensure public safety and assist in disaster management.
  • The Government may temporarily take over telecommunications services and networks from entities authorised under this section.
  • This can ensure communication to the service in an emergency situation as per priority.
  • This section will help the government to ensure that vital communication services can function smoothly during an emergency.

The implementation of the Telecom Act 2023 will bring many changes to India’s telecom environment. The Act will replace the old regulation governed by the Indian Telegraph Act 1885, the Wireless Telegraph Act 1933, and the Telegraph Wire Act 1950. The Act will promote telecom services in rural areas and will significantly support research, development and pilot projects in addition to its existing role. The Act will prioritize user security by mandating security measures against spam and malicious communications.
