New UPI Rules: Big changes are going to come for those who make payments through UPI from August 1, 2025. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued new rules, the most important of which is that after every successful transaction, the bank itself will tell you how much balance is left in the account. This is so that you do not have to check the balance again and again and the pressure on the system is reduced.
1. Balance check limit: Now you will be able to check the balance only 50 times in a day on any one app (eg PhonePe, GPay). If you use two apps (eg Paytm + PhonePe), then there will be a separate limit of 50 times on each app. There will be a restriction or limit on checking the balance during peak hours (10 am–1 pm and 5 pm–9:30 pm).
2. Auto balance update after every transaction: A big relief for shopkeepers, street vendors or businessmen! Now after every successful payment, the bank will send an SMS or notification to inform the balance. This will eliminate the need to check the balance again and again.
3. Linked bank account information: You will now be able to view the list of bank accounts linked to your mobile number only 25 times a day. And that too only when you select the bank yourself and approve it.
4. New AutoPay schedule: Auto payments like Netflix , Amazon Prime or SIP will now be charged only during non-peak hours:
5. Rules for checking transaction status: If the payment fails or gets stuck, its status can be checked only after 90 seconds. This can be done only 3 times a day and a gap of 45–60 seconds is required each time.
Annual Audit: Every bank must get its system audited once a year. The first report must be submitted by August 31, 2025.
Chargeback Limit: You can ask for payment reversal (chargeback) only 10 times in 30 days.
Core payments will not be impacted: Core services like money transfers or merchant payments will not be affected by these rules.
In the past months, the load on the UPI server had increased, due to which there were complaints of transaction failure or slowdown. According to NPCI, frequent balance checks or autopay processing puts pressure on the system. The new rules will reduce the server load and UPI will run smoothly.
